Course description

Every home visit is an opportunity to help an older person feel safe, heard and in control. This induction course shows Support at Home caregivers and personal care workers how to put the Statement of Rights and Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standard 1: The Individual into everyday practice.

Across five short modules, you’ll learn how to respect a person’s choices and routines, support independence while responding to risk, ask permission during personal care, protect dignity and privacy, provide culturally safe and trauma-aware care, and respond when someone raises a concern.

Each module includes clear, practical guidance, a realistic “What would you do?” scenario and a short quiz with feedback. By the end, you should be able to make respectful decisions during a home visit and know when to seek guidance or report a concern. Complete this course alongside your organisation’s care-plan, safety, incident-reporting and role-specific training.

Support at Home caregivers, home care workers and personal care workers preparing to provide services in an older person’s home.

No. The course uses plain language and everyday home-visit examples. Experienced workers can also use it as a refresher.

It has five modules: the Statement of Rights; person-centred care, choice and dignity of risk; dignity, privacy and consent; cultural safety and trauma-aware care; and speaking up and responding to concerns.

Allow approximately 15–20 minutes per module, or 75–100 minutes for the full course. You can complete it in shorter sessions if your learning platform saves your progress.

Yes. Each module ends with a short quiz. You will also make a decision in a practical scenario and receive feedback explaining the preferred response.

Course completion is one part of induction. Before independent service delivery, your organisation must also confirm that you understand its procedures, your role, the person’s care plan and any required practical skills.

Stop the task, listen and check what the person wants. If there is a safety concern or the change affects the care plan, follow your organisation’s guidance, reporting and documentation process.

Follow your organisation’s emergency or escalation procedure. Report and record what you observed through approved channels. Do not investigate a possible incident yourself.
