Course description

Supported decision-making is a person-centered approach that helps a person with disability make and communicate their own decisions. Support worker should support participants to exercise choice and control while respecting their dignity, preferences, communication needs, individual plans and applicable legal decision-making arrangements.

By the end of this training, staff should be able to:

·        Explain supported decision-making in practical terms.

·        Recognise that disability does not automatically mean a person cannot make decisions.

·        Provide information in a way the participant can understand.

·        Offer genuine choices without pressure or undue influence.

·        Support dignity of risk and discuss safer options when appropriate.

·        Understand the role of families, guardians and other authorised decision-makers.

·        Respond appropriately when a participant changes their mind or makes a choice staff disagree with.

·        Document significant decisions objectively and escalate uncertainty or safety concerns.

Decision-making support should be matched to the person and the decision. A participant may make some decisions independently and need more support with other decisions. Support can also change depending on the person’s communication, environment, stress level and the complexity of the decision.

• Explain options using simple, neutral language. • Use pictures, Easy Read information, gestures, demonstrations or communication devices. • Break a complex decision into smaller steps. • Give the participant additional processing time. • Choose a quiet environment with fewer distractions. • Repeat or rephrase information without changing its meaning. • Help the person identify possible benefits, risks and consequences. • Involve a trusted person where the participant wants this and it is appropriate.
