Course description

Trauma-informed practice focuses on understanding how past or present experiences shape emotional responses, communication, and trust. This course provides practical tools to help staff create safe, predictable environments while delivering person-centred support. Participants will explore core principles—including safety, trust, choice, collaboration, empowerment, and cultural respect—and learn how to replace intrusive questioning with supportive actions. The training covers practical communication, trauma-informed personal care, avoiding re-traumatisation, objective documentation, and maintaining boundaries and safeguarding standards without compromising individual rights or workplace safety.

Frequently asked question

No. Staff do not need to know or investigate a person’s trauma history. The approach focuses on responding to the person's current needs, preferences, support plan, and signs of distress, shifting the focus from asking "Why are you behaving like this?" to asking "What would help right now?"

No. Trauma-informed practice does not mean accepting abuse, violence, or unsafe conditions, nor does it mean discarding professional boundaries. It emphasizes maintaining clear, professional limits and following safety procedures while treating the individual with compassion, respect, and dignity.

It requires documentation to be strictly objective, factual, and non-judgmental. Instead of using subjective labels like "aggressive" or "manipulative," staff record specific observable actions, environmental factors, strategies used, and outcomes (e.g., recording "participant raised their voice and requested space" rather than "participant was difficult").
